An optical input device that captures a physical picture and converts it to a digital format. Scanners use light-sensing equipment to capture an image on paper or other medium. The image is translated into a digital signal and is represented in a graphical format. Image editing software can be used to compress or otherwise manipulate the image, and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software can convert word-based images to text documents. Several styles of scanners exist, including flatbed (scan head passes over a stationary subject), feed (subject is pulled across a stationary scan head), and handheld (user passes device over a stationary subject).
