Employers are required to carry workers compensation insurance. Workers compensation is governed by state law and provides medical care for an injury that an employee receives on the job. In addition, workers compensation may result in monetary compensation for a temporary or permanent disability that resulted from the injury. These laws also provide benefits for dependents of those workers who are killed because of work-related accidents or illnesses.
It is illegal for a company to fire an employee for filing a workers compensation claim or to not hire a person because they filed a workers compensation claim in the past. Most states impose heavy financial penalties on employers that do not carry workers compensation insurance.
