Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage, enacted by a court decree or judgment, and it results either in the complete dissolution of the marital relation or in the suspension of its effects so far as the spouses' cohabitation. After a divorce, there are often legal disputes regarding child custody, the splitting of assets, and alimony. Because the court decides how to allocate the assets in the event of a dispute, some people decide to sign a prenuptial agreement prior to the marriage which would protect these assets. This is more common for marriages between individuals with significantly unequal wealth.
