Child custody refers to the rights and responsibilities a parent carries with respect to a child. In the event of a divorce or separation between two parents, there is often a legal dispute over which of the two individuals receives custody of any children they had together as a couple. Disputes over child custody do not always have to take place between two parents, though. For example, another party, such as the child's grandparents may try to gain child custody if they deem the natural parents unfit guardians for the child or children. A number of arrangements exist with regards to child custody, including joint custody, shared custody, and sole custody.
