Adoption is a legal process whereby a child becomes the legal child of a family not related to the child by blood. The adopted child is entitled to all privileges belonging to a biological child of the adoptive parents, including the right to inherit.
Many adoption records are kept confidential, protecting the adopted child as well as the biological parents. The adoption process consists of two legal actions. The first legal act is the termination of the biological parents' rights over the child. The second legal step is for these parental rights to be transferred to the adopting parents. Adoption law varies from state to state.
