A misdemeanor is a crime other than a felony or an infraction that can be punished either by payment of a fine or by imprisonment of up to one year in the county jail. A misdemeanor generally results in small fine or a sentence of no more than 90 days. In many cases, minor dismeanors can be punished with a sentence of community service or part-time imprisonment. A gross misdemeanor is a criminal act for which the sentence is greater, resulting in imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Minor traffic violations, vandalism and petty theft are all examples of misdemeanor.
