Fraud is the act of intentionally deceiving an individual or company in order to enjoy unlawful gains. Fraud is a rather general classification referring to a number of different crimes, including but not limited to forgery, the falsification of records and books, and the delivery of false statements. The charge of fraud can be given not only if the accused party's has produced or conveyed false information, but also if the party has witheld information that lawfully should have been disclosed. Consumer fraud, tax fraud, and insurance fraud are all common types of fraud. In any case in which the government is defrauded, the False Claims Act can be used to file a suit against the suspected criminal(s).
