Most printers have replacable ink cartridges, some of them refillable. In many cases, the printers themselves (laser or ink jet) are loss-leaders: they make the money back on selling the ink.
If you shop around on the web, you can find ink cartridge at discounts for the specific model of ink (or laser) cartridge that you are looking for. However, caveat emptor: beware of online services that offer to refill ink cartridges that are not designed to be refillable or of knock-off cartridges--often the quality is low and many users often give up, dispose of them, and return to buying new cartridges.
