Medicare is the federal health insurance program designed to provide healthcare for the elderly and disabled. People who qualify for Social Security benefits are automatically eligible for Medicare. Although Medicare pays for many medical expenses, it does not cover all expenses and the remaining cost can be substantial. There are many professionals who can help you create a well-designed retirement plan that includes costs such as medical expenses.

Medicare provides medical expense coverage to people 65 and older. The program is comprised of two major parts: Hospital Insurance (part A) and Supplementary Medical Insurance (part B). Medicare part A has no premium and pays 100% of hospital costs for the first 60 days after you have paid a deductible of about $720. Medicare part B pays up to 80% of your doctor bills for a monthly premium of about $78. The costs you pay, like coinsurance, co-payments, and deductibles are known as "gaps" and you can cover these gaps by buying a Medigap policy.
