Diabetes Management - Links
Diabetes is a disease characterized by the inability to control blood glucose levels. Type I diabetes, often known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes because of it's frequent onset before adulthood, accounts for 5-10 percent of all diabetes cases. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease that targets the Beta-cell producing islets of Langerhans, destroying these insulin producing cells, leaving the individual unable to produce insulin. The factors leading to type I diabetes are still under investigation and have been linked to environmental, viral, and genetic sources.
The pharmaceutical industry is regularly innovating with diabetes management treatments. The latest discovery, human-synthetic insulin treatments, have been particulalry effective for patients who have experienced adverse reactions to bovine-based insulin.
