Chemical storage is a required safety precaution for keeping any hazardous material (or "HAZMAT") that is a threat to humans, animals, or the environment. Depending on the nature of the chemical (gas, liquid, or solid) and the danger it presents (whether it is explosive, poisonous, radioactive, etc), a different form of storage may be used. All hazardous materials are registered with the United Nations under a unique ID number, with associated handling protocols and procedures. These unique IDs allow the shipping of such materials to be tracked, thereby facilitating their safe assessment and cleanup. Anyone untrained in HAZMAT operations should stay away from a HAZMAT incident to avoid becoming contaminated or interfering with emergency operations.
Additional standards may apply for handling and marking HAZMATs at fixed facilities, including NFPA 704, and regulations requiring chemical safety information for employees and the public. Hazardous materials can be stored in special chemical storage buildings offsite or in portable modular units that are fire-rated and have sophisticated ventilation and temperature-control systems. Below are links to just a few of the many companies that specialize in safe chemical storage solutions.
